Logan Christopher Kelley accused of multiple murders and attacks during fireworks celebration.

Logan Christopher Kelley, a 26-year-old Huntington Beach resident, has been charged with special circumstances murder following a violent incident on the Fourth of July that left two people dead and three others injured. The attack took place in a crowded neighborhood where many had gathered to watch fireworks.

Kelley faces two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and a sentencing enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon, as detailed in a criminal complaint filed Monday in Orange County Superior Court. The special circumstances allegation, due to the multiple murders, opens the possibility for prosecutors to seek life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. Additionally, Kelley is charged with a misdemeanor for battery of a police officer, according to court records.

The victims who lost their lives have been identified as William Thomas Collins, 47, and Eric Clayton Hodges, 42, both residents of Huntington Beach, according to the coroner’s office.

While authorities have not released extensive details about the motive or execution of the attack, the criminal complaint indicates that one of the attempted murder victims, a juvenile, was attacked with a knife. The violent incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near 16th Street and Pecan Avenue, a location described by police as a prime viewing spot for the city’s firework show. Kelley was apprehended roughly 30 minutes later.

The attack happened in a neighborhood consisting mainly of two-story apartments and condominiums, just five blocks from the beach. Thousands had flocked to Huntington Beach for the annual Independence Day parade and fireworks display, which commenced at 9 p.m. and lasted about 20 minutes. Despite a 10 p.m. curfew for neighborhood fireworks, many ignored the deadline, according to police.

Kelley is set to appear in court for his arraignment on Tuesday, as per court records.
